Going to college can put a teenager under a lot of pressure, because it’s a radical change in his life, according to Psychotherapists Amy Exum and Graciela Jimenez.

They consider that a lot of things start happening, like a new style of teaching and grades, new professors to deal with, new friends, and teens can start to feel some of the old depressive symptoms.

“When you’re helping your child go away to college, talk to them about how they’re going to catch it, what they can do. They know when they start to feel blue, they know the things that trigger it,” they say.

The key is having a support system in order to help them. “If they’re stuck in isolation, they don’t have a plan, they may just stay isolated rather than reaching out,”.
