Neonatal Withdrawal Symptoms |

Dr. Jaime Fernandez, Pediatric Neonatologist with Homestead Hospital, says any baby demonstrating withdrawal symptoms needs a long and complicated therapy that can only be done in a hospital.

He explains the symptoms can range from mild irritability to seizures and death. “The treatment is very supportive. If it is just mild irritability, where the baby is a little fussy, often times by cuddling and feeding you can take care of the baby’s needs.” He also points out most of the times, the baby will need some sort of medication that is closely related to what the mom was on, like some sort of derivative of an opioid such as methadone.
