Approaches to Psychiatric Emergencies
Ana Lara, Outpatient Psychiatry Supervisor with Banyan Health, says ER is not always fully equipped to handle a psychiatric emergency, and it is better to go to centralized receiving facilities and crisis units where they are better equipped for the patient to come in and get the treatment as quickly as possible.
Dr. Moraima Trujillo, Chief Medical Officer with Banyan Health, explains there are several treatment options. One of them is outpatient treatment, another one is being admitted into a crisis stabilization unit for a major psychiatric emergency in which there is a potential for suicidal behavior.
