Dr. Brad Herskowitz, Neurologist at Baptist Health Neuroscience, explains that the most common cause of progressive dementia is Alzheimer disease. He states there are five million people in the United States with this condition. The neurologist lists the most common Alzheimer's symptom: memory loss, problems with language, word finding problems, depression, agitation, which is a very difficult symptom to deal with, according to him. There are many causes of dementia such as stroke and brain injuries, clots in the brain and vitamin deficiencies. Dr. Herskowitz also explains what could be other neurodegenerative diseases: Lewy body dementia (LBD) and frontotemporal dementia. “These are hereditary diseases," he says.
