Drowning Risks By Age Group

Infants new-born to one-year-old are at risk to drown in bathtubs and buckets, and swimming pools are dangerous for toddlers from 1 to 4 years old. Dr. Fernando Mendoza, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Baptist Children's Hospital, says babies do not have the muscular straight to sit up well, and you should never trust your child in the bathtub sitting up. Kids from 5 to 11 years old, and adolescents from 12 to 17 years old are at risk to drown in canals, lakes and beaches.
