Statistics of Diabetes in USA

Diabetes affects 30 million people in the U.S. today, of which 22 million of them are diagnosed and 9.1 million are undiagnosed. Diabetes causes kidney failure, is non-traumatic lower-limb amputation, adult blindness, is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and is the 7th leading cause of death. Lois Exelbert, Nurse Diabetes Educator and Patient Care Manager with Baptist Hospital of Miami, says prediabetes is also an abnormal state even though it isn’t in the diagnostic category. She explains there are two tests (fasting blood sugar test and A1C test) to know if the patient has the condition.
