Substance Abuse: a Real Disease

Dr. Moraima Trujillo, Chief Medical Officer with Banyan Health, explains substance abuse is a disease and not a choice of the individual. She says there is scientific evidence to support the fact that there are brain receptors that respond to certain substances, such as painkillers, opioids and other stimulants. She points out it is important to educate children to avoid their using drugs because of the peer pressure. She also highlights adults can become drug addicts after self-medicating.
