Functions Of Sleep
There are different functions of sleep. Dr. David Seiden, Medical Director of the Pembroke Pines Sleep Center with Baptist Health South Florida, explains the restorative function refers to cell repair. "During sleep protein synthesis it is enhanced which helps to cellular repair. The other interesting thing that occurs during sleep is that growth hormone is secreted in very high quantities, particularly during the deeper stages of sleep, which is important for cellular repair and growth," he says.
About energy conservation, he points out it may be the purpose of sleep, to help conserving limited resources to allocate those resources when we need them, which is when we are awake.
