Neuro-Oncology and Cancer
Dr. Yazmin Odia, Lead Physician of Medical Neurologic Oncology with Miami Cancer Institute, explains a neuro-oncologist takes care of patients who have cancers or tumors involving the brain, spinal cord, and meninges. She points out meninges are the covering that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord. "They serve as a protective barrier between the brain and the surrounding bone structure, such as the skull and the spine."
About brain cancer, she highlights there are about 170,000 people suffering from brain cancer per year, and about 70,000 new cases diagnosed yearly. It only makes up 1.4% of all cancers diagnosed yearly.
