Dr. Jeffrey Schneider, Gastroenterologist with Baptist Health South Florida, explains heartburn is very common, and unrecognized heartburn can lead to permanent changes in the lighting of the esophagus and that can predispose you to esophageal cancer. He also says dietary indiscretion can give you that heartburn. "There are foods that lower the sphincter that is protecting your esophagus from the stomach acid."
