Reducing Polypharmacy
Dr. Yvon Petiote, Family Medicine Physician with Bethesda Hospital, Baptist Health, explains there is a better approach for a patient that takes 12 medications, where at least three medications are considered anticholinergic, which have types of properties that are not always good for the elderly population, because they can cause urinary retention, blurry vision, etc.
He recommends looking at whether they have duplicates of medication or if some medication may fulfill multiple purposes, so it is better to use one medication instead of using two.
