Acne scar is an area where the acne has gone down into the dermis and is causing more damage in the collagen that was not able to repair itself.
Dr. Deborah Longwill, Dermatologist with Baptist Health South Florida, advises treating acne before it gets to that point in order to prevent cystic acne.
However in case a patient has cystic acne, she explains physicians have lasers to help build collagen, and can fill scars with fillers like hyaluronic acid and mild peels.
